American Company Offers 21st Century Security Enhancement for Hotel Guests

Like everyone else in the lodging industry, First View Security, maker of the Digital Door Viewer (DDV) is alarmed by crimes aimed at hotel guests and properties.

While lodging properties maintain very high levels of security, technology advances are creating opportunities to enhance guest protection. The DDV is a video system that empowers individual guests to clearly see what is happening in hallways outside of their hotel room doors.

In the past, the first and only information about external activity available to guests came from the tiny peephole in the guestroom door. The team at First View realized that by supplying a superior and safer view, the Digital Door Viewer is not only a product of convenience, but also one that adds a significant security value.

“The Digital Door Viewer has always been about convenience and security,” states First View President, Suzette Fowler, “but what is becoming quite clear is that empowering hotel guests with personal security technology can be extremely valuable in elevating their level of safety. Tactics used by criminals are increasingly bold and sophisticated. Products such as the DDV help to strengthen travelers’ defenses against criminal activity.”

”To use a peephole in order to see what is happening in the hallways is using a 19th century device to combat 21st century threats. The Digital Door Viewer uses an advanced digital camera and LCD monitor to deliver a clear and crisp view into the hallway.
"As anyone who travels is aware, a guest must stand directly against the door to peer through the peephole,” adds Fowler. “With the Digital Door Viewer a guest can stand to the side at arm’s length and still see a large, clear image of what is happening in the hallway on their LCD screen. Why be forced to peep when it is possible to see clearly from a safe distance?”

That is not the only advantage of the DDV. The device also offers the guest a range of view that is many times the area of a standard peephole and with minimum distortion. It is also impossible for anyone on the outside of the door to see into the room. Using AAA batteries, the Digital Door Viewer will operate even during a power outage.

Many hotels and resorts are already installing the Digital Door Viewer to add to the security and comfort of their guests. James Hogg, former director of operations for Skylofts in Las Vegas, stated that he was extremely pleased with the DDVs he installed in the MGM property. “In terms of security,” said Hogg, “the traditional view is just the person in front of the door, but with this technology you see the person directly in front and the person behind him, and the whole corridor.” Hogg added that it is very helpful in complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act because it can be mounted lower on the door and still show the same view of the corridor.

“It’s not difficult to understand that being able to see what is going on around you leads to a increased level of safety and sense of security.” says Fowler. “What is clear is that property owners need to be proactive and not reactive in response to modern security threats. The DDV is a life safety occupancy feature that reduces the danger to hotel room occupants from potentially violent actions.”
